                Research Directions

                Professor Fu’s laboratory is mainly focused on:(1) Common feature of metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetesmellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, and diabetic nephropathy; (2) exploring the relationship between peripheral 5-HT system and metabolic diseases.


                Professor Fu has a unique understanding on metabolic diseases. Fu’s team has found that high-fat diet and stress stimulation have a significant synergistic effect on the occurrence of metabolic syndrome, not only can promote the conversion of fatty liver to steatohepatitis, but also promote insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and blood vessels, heart disease. They have a major discovery of the pathogenesis of insulin resistance-related diseases. It was first found worldwide that 5-HT can be synthesized in the liver, and that abnormality of peripheral 5-HT system is the common and decisive reason of insulin resistance-related diseases. They have confirmed that there is a common essential reason for high-fat diet and glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance to be an increase in peripheral and hepatocyte 5-HT synthesis and 5-HT2R upregulation. More than 50 research papers have been published, many of which are collected by SCI. Six invention patents are applied as first inventor. Studies regarding pre-clinical pharmacodynamics and toxicology of the multiple new drugs have been completed through cooperation with the companies.
